What Is a QR Code and How It Works

A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores information in a grid of black and white squares called modules. Unlike a traditional one-dimensional barcode, a QR code can be read both horizontally and vertically, which lets it hold far more data - URLs, plain text, contact details, WiFi credentials, and more. Any modern smartphone camera can scan a QR code and instantly act on the data it contains.

Static vs Dynamic QR Codes

QR codes come in two flavors. A static QR code encodes the data directly into the image itself - what you see is what is stored, forever. A dynamic QR code stores a short redirect link and resolves to the real destination through a server, which lets you change the destination later but usually requires an account and may stop working if the provider shuts down.

QR Code Error Correction Levels Explained

QR codes use Reed-Solomon error correction, which means a scanned code can still be read even when part of it is damaged, dirty, or covered by a logo. There are four levels you can choose from in this tool:

L (Low) - recovers about 7% of data. Smallest, densest code; use when the QR will stay clean and undamaged.

M (Medium) - recovers about 15%. A balanced default for most uses.

Q (Quartile) - recovers about 25%. Good when you plan to overlay a small logo in the center.

H (High) - recovers about 30%. Most robust; best for printed materials that may get scuffed, but produces a denser code.
